Digitalization will reshape the future energy system - Fortum begins multicloud adoption journey with IBM Services

Helsinki Finland, November 6, 2019: Today, IBM (NYSE: IBM) announced that leading Nordic Clean-Energy company Fortum is adopting a new multicloud strategy to accelerate its digital reinvention and support the transformation of the entire energy system.

Renewable energy sources and efficient and ecological infrastructure are becoming increasingly important to mitigate climate change and ensuring a sustainable and sufficient energy supply to everyone. But renewable energy sources like solar and wind are also more volatile and need to be balanced and optimized in order to deliver full value. This puts pressure on the current energy systems to run much more efficiently than before – and here digitalization plays a key role.

By modernizing the IT infrastructure and moving existing applications to a multi-cloud environment, Fortum can build new digital capabilities and utilize data in a whole new way than before. The digital platforms will also allow consumers to be part of the energy ecosystem, for example by letting them sell the unused energy from their households or vehicles.

Creating a solid multicloud strategy requires finding the right partners who can advise the company on how to build new cloud capabilities, modernize existing applications, and manage the workloads.

Fortum turned to IBM Services to advise them in moving, building and managing their data on cloud. IBM Services worked with Fortum to develop the right strategy that will deliver business value, determine which processes, methods and applications should be moved or modernized for cloud, enabling the company to better plan for future digital initiatives.

“The most substantive matter in our collaboration with IBM was, that the Cloud strategy will enable our Digital Strategy. With a deep and professional assessment done by IBM Services we found the path to address the future needs and accelerate our transformation towards the digitalization of our business,” said Arun Aggarwal, Senior Vice President for Business Technology, Fortum.

“Fortum is a great example of how moving into Cloud is far more than just a technical challenge, which will bring more value to the company. It is a total transformation that needs change management from the beginning. IBM meets clients where they are in terms of their IT infrastructure choices and guides them through a cloud solution that best fits their business needs,“ said Gaurav Mathur, Vice President and Europe Lead, IBM Services for Cloud Strategy.
