IBM, the official digital partner of the Masters, is once again supporting the Tournament digital experience through a series of applications and technology innovations. New for the 2022 Tournament, the Masters is introducing Projections with IBM Watson, an artificial intelligence (AI) feature that analyzes 22 different training factors (such as weather, previous performance and biographical information), and 40+ zones on the course (fairways, greens, etc) to generate daily predictions for each of the golfers competing in this year's Masters. Player Insights with IBM Watson, which were announced at the 2021 Tournament, are AI-generated insights on every player in the field. Alongside Player Insights, Projections with IBM Watson will be integrated into Masters Fantasy and player profile pages, which are available in the Masters app and online experience.

To create the Players Insights and Projections, the IBM Consulting team leveraged AutoAI capabilities in IBM Watson Studio to train AI models using six years of Masters data (2016-2021), including data from more than 120,000 golf shots.  The solution factors in several data points including each golfer’s previous performance, and biographical information. With each of the factors and zones taken into consideration, Projections with IBM Watson can create predictions such as the most exciting hole to watch for every golfer, the low/high score for all golfers, projected finish on the leader board and projected Masters Fantasy points for every round.

IBM has been the digital partner of the Masters for more than 25 years, working closely to bring unparalleled experiences to the global Masters audience. Starting with the launch of Masters.org in 1996, the Masters has collaborated with IBM on a journey to the hybrid cloud to streamline workloads and deliver new fan experiences through cloud and AI technologies. The implementation of that technology has been showcased continually, including through the introduction of AI highlights, Round in Under Three Minutes, MyGroup, Player Insights and Projections powered with IBM Watson.

The Masters app and digital experiences, both powered by Red Hat OpenShift and IBM Watson, have the capabilities to bring these innovations to life for patrons during the Tournament. The accelerated pace of innovation for these experiences is a testament to the power of the IBM hybrid cloud.

The Masters will be played from  April 7-10  at Augusta National Golf Club in  Augusta, Ga. To see the technology in action, visit Masters.com or the Masters app on your mobile device, available on the App Store and Google Play Store.
