The US Open Reimagined

For nearly three decades, IBM has been the digital partner of the United States Tennis Association (USTA), host of the US Open tournament. But this year, the COVID-19 pandemic means the US Open is being held without the millions of spectators who would normally cheer from the grandstands during the two weeks of matches. The challenge of giving fans at home an immersive, interactive digital experience has inspired IBM and USTA to leverage artificial intelligence (AI), underpinned by hybrid cloud technologies, in creative new ways.

As the US Open gets underway in New York this week, the world’s top tennis players are performing in front of empty seats—not the 800,000 or so fans who would normally fill the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center during the two-week tournament.

The 2020 US Open will be held without in-person spectators and with most staff working from home. But the USTA has quickly adapted to these circumstances to deliver a world-class digital experience to millions of fans.
